Knowing where you can park and how to complete the journey prevents unexpected delays.
Is the road to Big Almaty Lake open to cars?
Private car access directly to the lake is frequently closed or restricted.
You can drive your vehicle into Ile-Alatau National Park via Dulati Avenue. However, you will reach a checkpoint where private cars are often turned away. At this point, you must either hike the remaining 8 to 11 kilometers or hire an official park taxi.
Can I drive to Alma-Arasan Gorge instead?
Yes, the road to Alma-Arasan Gorge remains open even when the lake road is closed.
The gorge is about a 30-minute drive from central Almaty. After passing the park entrance gate, the road splits. The route to Alma-Arasan is fully accessible, allowing you to reach the thermal springs easily. The restrictions only apply to the higher road leading to the lake.

How do I hike to the lake if the road is closed?
You can walk up the pipeline trail from the eco-post or checkpoint.
This hike covers 8 to 11 kilometers one way. It is a steep, physically demanding climb that takes 5 to 7 hours roundtrip. Wear sturdy hiking boots and carry plenty of drinking water, as facilities are limited.

Are there taxis that go all the way to the lake?
Yes, official park vehicles and eco-taxis are permitted past the checkpoints.
If you prefer not to hike, you can hire an official taxi at the checkpoint or book a direct transfer tour. These authorized vehicles bypass the private car restrictions and drive directly to the lake viewpoint.

How much does it cost to drive into the national park?
You must pay a pedestrian fee of 865 to 1,000 KZT per person, plus a vehicle fee.
The vehicle fee is roughly 2,595 KZT for a passenger car. You pay these eco-fees at the main park entrance gate in cash. Have local currency (KZT) ready.
Do I need identification at the road checkpoints?
Yes, you must carry your original passport.
Big Almaty Lake is located very close to the Kyrgyzstan border. Guards frequently check original passports at checkpoints along the lake road. Do not attempt to cross any restricted border zone barriers near the water.
