While summer brings turquoise waters, a winter trip to Ile-Alatau National Park offers a completely different environment. The high-altitude reservoir freezes over entirely, and the forested trails become snow-covered. Combining a trek to the frozen lake with a soak in the steaming Alma-Arasan hot springs makes for a contrasting day trip from Almaty.

Is it worth visiting during the winter months?

Yes, winter visits offer stark, frozen lake views and the experience of sitting in steaming hot springs surrounded by snow.

The landscape changes dramatically from May to October. Big Almaty Lake sits at an altitude of 2,511 meters (8,238 feet). By mid-winter, the 1.6-kilometer reservoir is usually a solid sheet of white ice. Down in the Alma-Arasan Gorge at 1,780 meters, the outdoor thermal pools contrast sharply with the cold air and snow-covered trees.

Can you visit Alma Arasan in winter?

Yes, the open-air thermal pools at Alma-Arasan remain accessible throughout the winter months.

The hot springs feature three main pools. Two contain warm radon-sulphur mineral water naturally heated between 20°C and 42°C. The third is a cold plunge pool fed by mountain river water. Soaking in the warm water while snow falls around you is a major draw for winter visitors. Just a 5-minute walk away, the Maiden's Tears Waterfall freezes solid, creating interesting ice formations.

What are the winter temperatures at Big Almaty Lake?

Temperatures at 2,511 meters are significantly colder than in central Almaty, dropping well below freezing.

Because the lake sits high in a glacial cirque, it experiences harsh alpine winter conditions. Wind chill makes the air feel much colder than the thermometer reads. You must wear a heavy winter jacket, thermal base layers, gloves, and a hat. Sturdy winter hiking boots are essential for navigating icy, unpaved trails safely.

Is the road to Big Almaty Lake open to cars in winter?

Road access to the lake is frequently restricted or completely closed to private vehicles in winter due to snow and ice.

Even in summer, private car access directly to the lake is sometimes restricted. In winter, this is almost guaranteed. Visitors usually hike the final 8 to 11 kilometers or use official park vehicles if available. The hike takes 5 to 7 hours roundtrip and is physically demanding on an icy incline. Taking public bus #108 or #211 will only get you to the Alma-Arasan Resort stop, not the lake.

What to wear when visiting Big Almaty Lake in winter?

Pack heavy winter clothing for the lake and bathing gear for the hot springs.

  • Clothing: Thick insulated jacket, thermals, gloves, and warm headgear.
  • Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with good grip for ice and snow.
  • Springs gear: Swimsuit, towel, flip-flops, and a warm change of clothes.
  • Essentials: Original passport for border checkpoints, plus snacks and hot drinks in a thermos.

Are the Alma-Arasan hot springs free in winter?

Yes, accessing the pools is free year-round, but you must pay the national park entrance fee.

Ile-Alatau National Park charges an environmental fee of roughly 865 to 1,000 KZT (about $2 USD) per pedestrian. Vehicles incur an extra charge, such as 2,595 KZT for a passenger car. Once inside the park boundaries, you do not need a separate ticket to use the thermal spring pools.
