Big Almaty Lake

Big Almaty Lake is a turquoise alpine reservoir sitting 2,511 meters above sea level.

Located 15 kilometers south of central Almaty, this glacial lake holds roughly 14 million cubic meters of water. It serves as a primary source of drinking water for the city, meaning strict sanitary zones apply and swimming is prohibited.

Because the lake sits close to the Kyrgyzstan border, you must bring your original passport for security checkpoints. Stay on marked trails to protect the alpine ecosystem and avoid crossing any restricted barriers.
